Blender MCP Setup Guide: Claude Code, Codex & Cursor (2026)

Install MCP for Blender (blender-mcp) in one command, pair it with Blender Agent Skills, and fix the most common setup problems.

MCP for Blender, still widely called blender-mcp, lets an AI agent drive Blender directly. It is the most-starred game-adjacent MCP server on GitHub, with 31,804 stars as of 21 October 2026. It is a community project and is not affiliated with the Blender Foundation.

1. Install (one command)

The setup script installs uv if needed, finds the MCP clients on your machine (Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, OpenCode, Antigravity) and lets you pick which ones to configure. It then installs and enables the Blender add-on.

Already have uv?

uvx mcp-for-blender setup

Your existing configs are kept: the script only adds a blender entry and saves a .bak of every file it changes.

2. Restart properly

Fully quit your AI app and reopen it. On Windows, quit it from the system tray, because closing the window is not enough. Then open Blender: the add-on starts its server when Blender launches.

3. Your first prompt

Build a low-poly campfire scene with three rocks and warm lighting.

The package rename

The PyPI package blender-mcp is now mcp-for-blender. Existing setups keep working (uvx blender-mcp still runs the server, and no config change is needed), but new installs should use the new name.

Make it production-grade with skills

MCP gives the agent hands. Skills give it technique. Blender Agent Skills adds workflows for retopology, UVs, PBR, baking, rigging and per-engine export (Roblox, Unity, Unreal, Godot, web):

That pack requires Blender 5.2+. When a Blender MCP server is connected, its skills work in your open Blender. Without one, they run Blender in the background.

Troubleshooting

  • The tools don't show up. The app was not fully restarted. Quit it completely and reopen it.
  • Windows Defender blocks the script. Install uv with winget install --id=astral-sh.uv -e, open a new terminal, then run uvx mcp-for-blender setup.
