Unity MCP Compared: MCP for Unity vs AI Game Developer vs Unity's Official Skills

Three ways to connect an AI agent to Unity in 2026: what each one is, how to install it, and which one to pick.

Searching for "unity mcp" turns up several projects that sound alike but do different things. Here are the three you will meet most often. GitHub numbers are as of 21 October 2026.

MCP for Unity (CoplayDev)

The most popular bridge. It supports Unity 2021.3 LTS through 6.x and needs Python 3.10+ via uv.

  1. Package Manager → Add package from git URL: https://github.com/CoplayDev/unity-mcp.git?path=/MCPForUnity#main
  2. Window → MCP for Unity → Configure All Detected Clients
  3. Prompt: "Create a cube at the origin and add a Rigidbody."

Pick it if you want the widest community and a pure MCP bridge that works with any client. Full listing →

AI Game Developer (IvanMurzak/Unity-MCP)

This project goes beyond the bridge: it generates skills from your project and lets you expose any C# method as a tool with a single attribute.

npm install -g unity-mcp-cli
unity-mcp-cli install-plugin ./MyUnityProject
unity-mcp-cli login
unity-mcp-cli open ./MyUnityProject

login signs in to ai-game.dev through your browser. If you'd rather skip the CLI, install the plugin with openupm add com.ivanmurzak.unity.mcp.

Pick it if you want project-specific skills and custom C# tools. Full listing →

Unity's official skills

These are not an MCP server. They are Unity-maintained skills that your agent applies automatically, and many of them drive the Editor through the Unity CLI.

npx skills add Unity-Technologies/skills

For Claude Code and Codex, Unity recommends its official plugin (Unity-Technologies/unity-agent-plugin), which ships the same skills as one package.

Pick it in every Unity project, as the baseline. Full listing →

Recommendation

Install Unity's official skills for the know-how, then add one MCP bridge: MCP for Unity if you want the most widely used option, or AI Game Developer if you want skills generated from your project. Avoid running both bridges at once in the same project.
