Agent Skills for Game Development: A Practical Introduction
What a SKILL.md is, how skills differ from MCP servers, and how to install your first game dev skill in Claude Code, Codex or Cursor.
AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Cursor can already write gameplay code. Without guidance, though, they improvise: a different project layout every time, physics code that ignores your engine's conventions, assets exported with the wrong settings. Agent Skills fix that by giving the agent a proven workflow to follow.
What is a skill?
A skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file, plus any scripts, templates or reference docs it needs. The front matter says when the skill applies, and the body says how to do the work. When your request matches, the agent loads the skill and follows it.
The format is portable. Awesome Gamedev Agent Skills, for example, ships 74 skills that load natively in Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Codex, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and more.
Skills vs. MCP servers
These two are often confused, but they do different jobs:
| Skill | MCP server | |
|---|---|---|
| Gives the agent | Know-how and a process | Tools to act inside a running program |
| Example | "How to structure a Godot 4 project" | "Run the project and read the debug output" |
| Lives in | A folder of Markdown and scripts | A local server the agent connects to |
For game work you usually want both: a skill for your engine and an MCP bridge into its editor. Compare the main bridges on our MCP servers page.
Installing your first skill
Most skills install in one of three ways:
-
The skills CLI, which detects your agent:
npx skills add gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills -
A Claude Code plugin marketplace:
/plugin marketplace add jame581/skillsmith /plugin install godot-prompter@skillsmith -
Copying the folder into
~/.claude/skills/,.agents/skills/or your agent's own skills directory.
Every listing on GameSkill shows the exact commands from the project's README, plus a copyable prompt that tells your agent to install it for you.
Where to start
- Godot: Godot AI for live editor control, plus GodotPrompter for project know-how.
- Unity: Unity's official skills plus MCP for Unity.
- 3D assets: MCP for Blender with Blender Agent Skills.
- A whole studio: Claude Code Game Studios.
Or browse everything by engine from the skills directory.
