What you get

  • The unreal-mcp skill: instructions and workflows for driving the Unreal Editor via MCP
  • create-toolset and unreal-skill: skills for adding AI-callable toolsets and in-editor Agent Skills
  • A SessionStart hook that tells Claude it is in an Unreal Engine project

Good fit

  • Changing, querying or running things in an open Unreal project from Claude Code
  • Teams that want Epic's own MCP integration instead of a community bridge

Not for

  • Agents other than Claude Code: it ships as a Claude Code plugin

Overview

Epic Games publishes this plugin in Anthropic's official Claude Code marketplace. It connects Claude Code to the Unreal Editor's own Model Context Protocol server, which exposes hundreds of tools from Unreal's ToolsetRegistry across more than 30 toolsets: actors, Blueprints, materials, Niagara, Control Rigs, Sequencer, State Trees, widgets, the Gameplay Ability System, automation testing and more.

Setup notes

  • The plugin does not ship a static .mcp.json. Run ModelContextProtocol.GenerateClientConfig ClaudeCode in the editor console to generate it, and re-run it after changing the port or URL.
  • To check the install: start the editor's MCP server, run /plugin in Claude Code and look for the plugin under Installed, then run /mcp and look for unreal-mcp.
  • If your engine build includes the optional proxy, it keeps the client session open while Unreal restarts.

Compare it with the community bridges on the MCP servers page.

Requirements

  • Unreal Editor with the ModelContextProtocol and AllToolsets plugins enabled
  • The editor's MCP server running: ModelContextProtocol.StartServer (default port 8000, path /mcp)
  • A bash shell on PATH for the SessionStart hook (macOS, Linux, or Windows via Git Bash or WSL)
