Prototype & Balance

Roadmap: Gameplay mechanics

From idea to verdict to numbers: a throwaway prototype with a PROCEED/PIVOT/KILL call, level and puzzle design, enemy AI, then a balance check.

Use it in this order. Prototype the riskiest idea first and accept the verdict. If it says PROCEED, design levels or puzzles around the mechanic, give enemies behaviour trees or utility AI, and run the balance check on your data against stated targets. The two Claude Code Game Studios skills need their bundled .claude support files (see each page); the other three were run on Godot 4.7.2 or .NET 8.

Self-check

  • The prototype answers one written question and ends in one verdict
  • Prototype code is thrown away, not merged
  • Every level has a critical path and the player metrics it was built for
  • Puzzle moves can be undone and the board state is data, not scene nodes
  • Balance values have target ranges; no data means NOT ASSESSED, not healthy
