What you get

  • The spa CLI (PyPI: aseprite-automation, latest release v0.5.2)
  • The spa agent skill for the create, verify, export loop
  • An optional spa-mcp server with the same operations; exported PNGs come back as image content
  • Commands for sprites, layers, frames, cels, tags, slices, palettes, tilesets, tilemaps, paint, filters and motion
  • plan check / plan run to validate a sequence of edits before one final save
  • Exports: PNG, GIF, PNG sequences, sprite sheets with JSON, tileset/map exports
  • Two wizard examples with playable Godot projects

Good fit

  • Scripted, repeatable pixel art and animation pipelines
  • Agents that need to verify results (inspect, compare frames, validate facts)
  • Delivering sprite sheets and tilesets to Godot or other engines

Not for

  • Watching the agent paint in your open Aseprite window: SPA runs Aseprite in batch mode
  • Art direction: visual review stays with you

About this skill

SPA ("Simple. Stable. Congruent.") gives agents one set of Aseprite operations through three doors: a shell CLI, an agent skill that teaches the create–verify–export loop, and an MCP server. Every command has a --schema, and results are structured so the agent can handle failures instead of guessing.

It covers far more than drawing: palettes and color profiles, keyed tiles, tilesets and tilemaps, selections, filters, cel motion curves, and export to sprite sheets with JSON. plan check and plan run batch several edits and check them before one final save.

The repo ships two wizard examples whose assets feed playable Godot spell-timing games, with the preparation choices and validation evidence recorded.

Requirements

  • Aseprite, installed separately (SPA does not bundle it)
  • Python 3.13+ and uv
  • Node/npm for the skills CLI
